Although Malcolm and Melanie Rands had been using organic and sustainable gardening practices on their property for many years, they knew they were still being exposed to way too many toxic chemicals through the other products they were using. As a result, in 1993 they started ecostore in their home in an eco-village in New Zealand. They sourced healthier ingredients, with no toxic or unnecessary chemicals, and were committed to developing products that would work just as well as mainstream brands. With expert help they launched their range of laundry products with a philosophy of 'health first', and soon built a loyal customer following.

In 1995 the Rands family moved to Auckland and set up a retail store in Freemans Bay. In 2005 the range was expanded to include household cleaners, body care and baby care, which all have a wealth of scientific research and innovation behind them to ensure the safest health, environmental and efficacy standards are achieved. In 2002 ecostore products were launched in New Zealand supermarkets, followed by Australia in 2004 and the United States in 2009.

Ecostore is working hard to minimise its packaging, and uses post-consumer recycled materials wherever possible. Any new materials used are recyclable, including labels, which are applied to packages using water-based adhesive, and it makes the only metal-free, plastic trigger spray in NZ, which means it also is fully recyclable.

Ecostore is the only manufacturer in Australasia with Diamond Enviro-mark, ISO14001 and carboNZero certifications. These certifications guarantee that its products are made with the utmost respect and care for our environment.

Ecostore has advised us that it is committed to using certified sustainable palm oil and palm oil derivatives whenever these are used as ingredients in its products. It is also keeping an eye on developments for alternatives such as oil derived from algae.
