Difference between a serum and oil
Generally, a serum is a water-based formulation, with concentrated active ingredients. Serums might come in the form of a thin and runny liquid to thicker gel, and are known to deeply penetrate skin thanks to their small molecule size. Meanwhile, facial oils combine one or more pure plant or nut oils, which have larger-sized molecules. Both work to hydrate and support the skin, but serums may be able to provide a deeper or more concentrated burst of active ingredients, whereas oils deliver moisture and protection. Depending on your skin type, you might use one or the other, either alone or in conjunction with a moisturiser. If using both a serum and an oil, it's typically recommended to apply your serum first, then an oil (in line with their molecule size ’ from smallest to largest!)
