Did you know that consuming hemp seeds is illegal in Australia? Hemp is taken from the cannabis plant species Cannabis Sativa, however it’s different to other varieties commonly referred to as marijuana! While you can buy Hemp Seeds to use for topical applications such as skincare, you can’t legally consume them!

Will Hemp seed consumption ever be legalised?

Food regulators in Australia are currently weighing up whether or not to allow the consumption of hemp seeds low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is responsible for the psychological effects of marijuana. According to the CEO of Food Standards, Steve McCutcheon, the level of THC found in hemp can range from 0-0.5%, which is found on the leaf and flowering head of the plant. This raises some concerns about whether consuming Hemp Seeds could potentially return a false-positive drug test. McCutcheon further explained that while some varieties can contain the psychoactive element of THC, other varieties contain little to none. If legalised, Australia will join a long list of countries already enjoying these seeds including the UK, USA, some European countries and Canada!

Are there any benefits of consuming Hemp Seeds?

There are many health benefits of consuming Hemp Seeds as they are rich in essential amino acids and a complete source of protein. One of these acids include Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA) which can help to naturally balance hormones! Hemp Seeds are also high in vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients including Calcium, Iron, Magnesium and Zinc.

When it comes to Hemp Seeds, I recommend Hemp Foods Australia Organic Hulled Hemp Seeds $14.95. These seeds are so nourishing and contain fats that can actually mimic the sebum produced by our own skin! Ideal for sensitive or rash prone skin, Hemp Seed are ultra soothing due to their high Omega-3 content. While these seeds aren’t legally allowed to be consumed, they can be used for creating hydrating body care and skincare.
