With the weather heating up it's critical that we start to slip slop slap and bring sun protection back to the forefront of our minds. Read on to find out the difference between chemical and physical natural sunscreens.

Many mainstream, chemical based sunscreens are designed to protect the skin from UV radiation by absorbing the energy from sunlight. To do this they can use a concoction of different chemicals.

Common chemicals to avoid in sunscreen

™ 4-MBC
™ Avobenzone
™ Parsol 1789
™ Cinoxate / 2-ethoxyethyl p-methoxycinnamate
™ Escalol 506 / Ethoxyethyl-p-methoxycinnamate
™ Homosalate
™ Menadione
™ Octocrylene
™ Octyl-methoxycinnamate (OMC)
™ PABA / para-aminobenzoic acid
™ Padimate O
™ Psolaren
™ 5-methoxypsolaren (5-MOP)
™ Dibenzoylmethanes
™ Escalol 507 / octyl dimethyl para-aminobenzoate
™ Eusolex 8020 / isopropyl dibenzoyl methane
™ Hydroxy methoxy methylbenzophenone (mexenone)
™ Methyl sinapate / methyl 3,5-dimethoxy 4-hydroxycinnamate
™ Octyl salicylate
™ Oxybenzone / benzophenone 3
™ Padimate A / amyl para-dimethylaminobenzoate
™ PBSA / 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid

These nasties are also bad news for the environment as UV filters and preservatives such as parabens are contributing to the bleaching of hard-coral due to beach-goers and tourists dousing themselves in sunscreen before snorkelling reefs or taking a dip in the ocean.

Remember that sun safety isn't just about sunscreen. The best defences against getting too much harmful ultraviolet radiation are protective clothing, sunglasses, shade and timing. Still want a tan? Have a look at our range of organic fake tan for a natural sun kissed glow!

With all sunscreens avoid contact with eyes and if irritation persists discontinue use. Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection. Wear protective clothing, hats and sunglasses when exposed to the sun, and stay in the shade where possible. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided. Frequent reapplication and use in accordance with the directions is required for effective sun protection. Always read the label and use only as directed.
