Understanding your skin is the first step
Understanding and taking note of skin behaviours, from when your skin feels its best to potentially when it doesn’t; think hormonal breakouts, allows you to adapt and bring in specific ingredient formulations. This means you can address any skin changes or concerns, rather than just going through the motion of applying the same products day-in and day-out. Intuitive skincare is not about adding more products to your regime, rather, looking at what your skin needs at any one time, whilst still being consistent. This can be as simple as introducing a spot treatment during your cycle or introducing an oil in winter.
Less in more
Choose the ’less is more’ approach. This minimalist approach doesn’t require a 6-10 step layering regime, it’s about giving the skin exactly what it needs and nothing more. Reduce toxic load on your skin and choose your skincare carefully by steering away from formulations that include artificial colours, fragrances, thickeners, mineral oils, and silicones that don’t necessarily provide a positive effect on the skin.
Seasonal skin changes
With every season change comes different potential needs for your skin. In summer, it’s super important to increase skin protection from harmful UV radiation, noting you should always apply SPF 365 days of the year. But, additionally, introducing boosting ingredients like Vitamin C helps to minimise hyper-pigmentation or Flavonoids and Tryptophan to soothe a post-summer beach day skin.
Yet, in the cooler months of the year, why not ready your skin by providing extra nourishment, hydration, and protection to ensure your barrier function remains in its optimal health.
When our skin is exposed to the changing elements of the cooler months, like drops in temperatures, indoor heating, and low humidity your skin may start to feel a little drier and/or dehydrated. This results in a less than optimal barrier that may be susceptible to sensitisation if not corrected.
In spring, your skin may become sensitised due to pollens, and may experience redness, flakiness, tightness, and irritation. By having a thorough understanding of potential skin triggers and becoming more in tune with your skin, means this condition can be quickly rectified.
How to be more intuitive with your skincare regime
Your skin will thrive on 3-4 products that are targeted for your concern and goal. Choose a cleanser that leaves your skin soft and hydrated, not tight, taut or red. Perform a double cleanse when you have been wearing make-up and/or SPF and remember to remove your cleanser with a sustainable cleansing cloth.
Next, apply a serum/moisturiser that will help nourish and hydrate. We love Biologi’s clean cosmeceutical range of serums that act as a serum and a moisturiser. The beauty of these serums is that are a multi-use and can be used intuitively, and interchangeably as your skin needs changes.
Introduce a face oil as needed to boost, strengthen, and heal your skin, by providing essential fatty acids and important vitamins like A, E and K. Lastly, exfoliate 1-2 a week (don’t overdo it), and always apply a SPF daily to protect from UV radiation.
