With its natural ability to help purify tap water, binchotan charcoal is commonly used as an simple, eco-friendly water filter. What you may not know however, is that Activated Charcoal can also be used as an effective air purifier! Activated charcoal sticks and custom made charcoal cubes are often used around computers and electronics to to help absorb electromagnetic waves.

How can Activated Charcoal work as an air filter?

In a study published in the Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis entitled ‘Microstructural characterization of white charcoal’, researchers discovered some amazing uses for Activated Charcoal. The charcoal tested in the study was ‘white’ charcoal, also know as binchotan. The study found that binchotan charcoal has a very high absorption capacity, allowing it to strongly absorb gases in the air including ethylene, acetic acid vapour and hydrogen. Due to its natural filtration properties, many countries are now looking to use binchotan charcoal to replace coke and coal in the manufacturing of aluminium and steel. According to the study, it’s believed binchotan charcoal can effectively reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses. This truly green product can also work particularly well in the fridge to remove any unpleasant odours.

How can Activated Charcoal cleanse your water?

When placed in water, binchotan charcoal works to filter chlorine and heavy metals as well as provide pH balance. Binchotan charcoal naturally alkalises your water and can even raise the pH levels up to 8.5 (this depends on your water supply). It’s also effective at removing any unpleasant tastes from your regular tap water! While using charcoal to filter our water is a recent phenomenon here in Australia, in Japan binchotan has been used as an eco-friendly water filter for the last 10-15 years!
