- Sydney, 14 July 2016 - By Irene Falcone -
Used for centuries by the Maori people in New Zealand, it was passed on to European settlers by Captain Cook upon his arrival. This natural skin treatment oil has incredible benefits for the health of both your body and skin complexion. There’s nothing I love more than discovering innovative ingredients that have extensive history.
What is the difference between Manuka Oil and Manuka Honey?
Manuka Honey is made in New Zealand and derived from bees pollinating the native Leptospermum tree. This precious honey has a much higher antibacterial activity compared to regular honey which is destroyed under heat and light. The antibacterial properties has do to the high levels of enzymes found in the natural formulation! You may have noticed that Manuka Honey can vary greatly in price and this is due to the Unique Manuka Factor levels. The UMF rating is dependent on the levels of antibacterial activity in that particular jar of honey. The UMF labelling indicates the medicinal properties of the honey, with the ideal rating sitting around 10 to 18.
Manuka Oil on the other hand, is obtained from sustainably harvesting the leaves from the Manuka trees and extracting the oil through steam distillation. According to Manuka Biotic, Manuka Oil is actually 100 times stronger than Manuka honey when compared gram for gram! It’s also 30 times stronger than Tea Tree Oil! This incredible oil is an effective antibacterial, anti-fungal, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory ingredient. One of the biggest differences between Manuka Honey and Manuka Oil however, is that Manuka Oil is completely vegan! As the production of this oil doesn’t involve the use of bees, Manuka Oil can be used by those who do not use products made from animal or animal byproducts.
What are the skincare benefits of Manuka Oil?
As Manuka Oil is filled with antibacterial properties, it’s perfect for keeping the skin clear and fighting off any bacterial growth. This bacteria is often the cause behind unpleasant skin conditions such as blemishes and breakouts! Manuka Oil also has can be used as an effective way to treat damaged skin and scarring caused by acne, as it works to promote the regeneration of new skin (cell turnover).
