Bulletproof Coffee
I'm Italian and I pretty much grew up on Expresso, I only have 1 per day and I make sure I only use nice strong organic coffee beans! So when I heard about this 'Bullet Proof Coffee' trend from my Paleo friends, I couldn't wait to see what all the talk was about!
It's supposed to not only give you the caffeine buzz of your life, but also increases mental clarity, boost energy and promote weight loss! It's basically a double shot of organic coffee, blended with grass-fed (unsalted) butter and a MCT (Medium-Chain Triglycerides) oil from Organic Coconut Oil. This unique hot beverage was created by Dave Asprey, check out his amazing video below and follow his links for the exact recipe!
I tried the original version at the Paleo cafe at Bondi Junction and also the 'Shotproof' version at my local About Life at Cammeray. Both versions were pretty hard to drink, and definitely not of the faint hearted! The original did taste a little better but even as a seasoned coffee drinker it got my heart racing! In both cases I felt completely energised the entire day, with absolutely no 4pm slump.
So what are the benefits?
The grass-fed butter provides all the goodness of healthy milk fat without any damaging denatured casein proteins found in cream. Starting your day with this pure fat source for breakfast will get your body burning it as energy for the rest of the day, giving you a satisfied level of energy for five to six hours.
The other fat source is MCT Oil (medium chain triglycerides extracted from coconut oil, making it 6x stronger!) and has a plethora of benefits. Not only does it convert energy faster than other oils so that less is turned into fat but it helps to maintain healthy cholesterol, enables better absorption of nutrients and is great for the immune system.
To make a cuppa at home, just brew up a nice pot of black coffee and blend with a big tablespoon of organic coconut oil and grass-fed, unsalted organic butter till it's nice and foamy. If you're caffeine free, you can follow exactly the same recipe using decaffeinated coffee.
