How to Treat Heartburn Naturally

Heartburn can strike at the worst times, and is often extremely uncomfortable. Seeing as so many of us suffer from it, and many on a regular or even daily basis, I worked with our Nourished Life Naturopath to find the best home remedies for acid reflux so we can all find natural heartburn relief.

Something I am often asked about is how to get rid of heartburn naturally. Because heartburn is actually very common and is something that often affects the whole family, with the help our Nourished Life Naturopath Mel I wanted to find the very best natural heartburn remedies and I just had to share them with you. While there is no natural cure for heartburn, these natural supplements and teas can help to prevent it while also improving other aspects of your health, including gut health.

What causes heartburn?

To treat and find relief from heartburn, it's important to first understand what causes it. Heartburn, also known as indigestion or acid reflux, often occurs when we eat too much too quickly. The contents of your stomach, including the acids which break down food, can actually rise back up into the oesophagus (our "food pipe") and cause an uncomfortable burning sensation in the chest. This discomfort is temporary but if you suffer from heartburn after each meal it can become inconvenient and frustrating. It's also known to occur after indulging in too much coffee or alcohol, and can even be exacerbated by anxiety and stress. If heartburn is affecting your daily life, be sure to visit your health care professional for a check-up.1

Natural remedies for acid reflux and heartburn

Life Botanics Apple Cider Vinegar Capsules
As recommended by our Naturopath Mel, the Life Botanics Apple Cider Vinegar Capsules are a really effective natural remedy for heartburn. These vegan capsules work to support gut health and pH balance thanks to the good bacteria and enzymes found in the raw, unfiltered 'mother' culture. If you're a heartburn sufferer, Mel recommends taking one capsule 30 minutes before eating to support the digestive system and help prevent heartburn.

Nature's Sunshine Slippery Elm Bark Powder
Another great natural heartburn treatment is the Nature's Sunshine Slippery Elm Bark Powder, which works to soothe inflammation in the digestive tract and help reduce the chances of heartburn as well as indigestion. This calming powder is made from pure Slippery Elm Bark, known for its naturally anti-inflammatory properties. Slippery Elm Bark also contains mucilage to help provide a protective barrier in the gut which absorbs impurities and bad bacteria. Take one teaspoon in a glass of water three times daily.

Supercharged Food Heal Your Gut Powder
One of my favourite multi-tasking health supplements for heartburn is the Supercharged Food Heal Your Gut Powder. This 100% fossil shell flour (technically called Diatomaceous Earth) works to naturally sweep your system of impurities, build-up and even parasites, working to improve overall health, boost the gut and combat heartburn. Add one tablespoon twice a day to water, juice, smoothies, cereal, baking, cooking... anything you want!

Natural heartburn tea

Edible Beauty Tea No. 5 - White Chai Digestif
The Edible Beauty Tea No. 5 - White Chai Digestif also works wonders for an upset digestive system, helping to get rid of that uncomfortable "full" feeling, balance blood sugar levels and treat stomach upsets. This deliciously light tea features Licorice as one of its key ingredients, which is often used as a natural heartburn remedy. Enjoy a cup after a meal to help prevent heartburn as well as combat bloating.

Pukka Tea - Relax
Given that anxiety can trigger heartburn, it's worth working a soothing tea into your routine to help treat indigestion too. I love the Pukka Tea - Relax as it combines soothing and anti-inflammatory Chamomile, Fennel Licorice and Marshmallow Root to calm both the digestive and nervous systems, plus it's free from heartburn-inducing caffeine.
