I love discussing oils here on the Nourished Life blog because they're found in so many natural products and have a long list of uses! Recently I've been researching the benefits of a popular herbal oil... Sea Buckthorn Oil! For years, Sea Buckthorn has been used in traditional medicine for skin conditions like minor burns and sun damage. When reduced to an oil form, it can often be found in natural haircare, skincare and beauty products!
What is Sea Buckthorn?
Sea buckthorn is a thorny shrub found along the Atlantic coast of Europe and throughout Asia. This plant sprouts leaves, fruits and seeds which are all used for traditional medicinal and remedial applications. Sea buckthorn oil is derived from the fruit that grows on this plant. Sea buckthorn oil has become increasingly popular in natural skincare as it contains over 190 nutrients and phytonutrients! This nutritious berry has twelve times the amount of Vitamin C than oranges, just as much Vitamin E as wheat germ and three times more Vitamin A than carrots!1 Sea buckthorn also contains Omegas 3, 6, 9 and 7, along with many other nutrients and antioxidants.1
What are the benefits of Sea Buckthorn?
This superfruit has been used in Chinese medicines for over 12 centuries to treat various conditions. Sea buckthorn has multiple uses for everything from skincare to haircare and contains over 60 antioxidants, 20 minerals and a long list of vitamins!
Sea Buckthorn skincare products
As it contains many essential fatty acids like Omega 7, sea buckthorn oil is highly moisturising and ideal for minor burns and wounds.3 Loaded with antioxidants like Vitamins A and E (particularly alpha tocopherol), sea buckthorn oil may work to smooth fine lines and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and skin roughness. Sea buckthorn is also an anti-inflammatory ingredient that can be used to treat dry skin conditions4
100% Pure Multi-Vitamin + Antioxidants Ultra Riche PM Treatment
This Multi-Vitamin + Antioxidants Ultra Riche PM Treatment is very hydrating and ideal for anyone with very dry skin. The Jojoba Company Jojoba Oil
If you have acne prone skin, it can be hard to find a facial oil that works well for you. I recommend trying the The Jojoba Company Jojoba Oil which is packed full of Omegas 6 and 9 to hydrate skin without overproducing oil. It's also balancing, which means that your skin won't react harshly or breakout. This facial oil works best when applied to cleansed, slightly damp skin. Just add around 3-5 drops!
Life Basics CoQ10 Daily Facial Oil
If you're looking for a serum that works just as hard as you do, you can try our Life Basics CoQ10 Daily Facial Oil. It's full of skin loving oils multivitamins and antioxidants from Sea Buckthorn, Almond Sweet Oil, Jojoba Oil, Natural Vitamin E and Rosehip Oil as well as CoEnzyme Q10. This nourishing formula can be used day or night and is great for anyone with dull or dehydrated skin. Simply a few drops after cleansing, focusing on problematic areas.
Sea Buckthorn body products
Weleda Sea Buckthorn Body Wash
Lately I've been loving using this creamy body wash from Weleda. It smells amazing (very fruity fresh!) and cleanses the body without leaving it feeling dry. Made with the skincare benefits of sea buckthorn oil as well as other essential oils like orange and grapefruit, this body wash is very gentle and hydrating. Weleda actually has a whole range of sea buckthorn products! After I get out of the shower I like to alternate between using their Sea Buckthorn Replenishing Body Lotion and the Sea Buckthorn Body Oil. Both of these body products are ideal for dry skin as they offer an intense burst of moisture and deep hydration.
Sea Buckthorn hair care products
Sea buckthorn can also be used in hair care products. Due to it's high levels of essential fatty acids and vitamin A, this nourishing oil can help support scalp health. If you have a dry, flaky scalp you may want to try out these products! The vitamin E in sea buckthorn oil also helps with scalp circulation, supporting hair growth and conditioning.3
Acure moroccan Repairing Shampoo & Conditioner
This haircare range from Acure, is not only hydrating but also effectively repairing. Formulated with Acure's potent mix of agran oil, argan stem cells, CoQ10 and sea buckthorn oil, this shampoo and conditioner duo will leave your hair soft, smooth and shinier than ever. If you have dry, damaged or coloured hair then I can't recommend these products enough! They help lock in hydration, repair damage and strengthen follicles for healthy looking hair.
Yarok Feed Your Volume Shampoo
If volume is what you're after then look no further than this shampoo from Yarok! This product is hair plumping and volume boosting! Made with natural, vegan ingredients like marshmallow root, sea buckthorn oil and seaweed extract, moisture will be locked in and hair will be looking fuller!
Sea Buckthorn lip products
Our lips need just as much attention as the rest of our face! That's why I love using lip products rich in essential oils like sea buckthorn! If you're looking for a low maintenance lip balm with a creamy application, I recommend the Hurraw Lip Balm with SPF15. It has a silky smooth formula that glides over the lips with the added benefit of SPF. For a natural lipstick with a subtle hint of colour, I love the La Mav Lip Treatments. Not only does this lipstick offer a beautiful sheen to the lips, it also protects them from the environment. My favourite shade is berry which is a great everyday colour!
