Your Guide to At Home & Portable Water Filters

Australia's water is amongst the safest and most drinkable in the world, but tap water can still be unpleasant to drink once you've tasted fresh and pure filtered water! water filters are designed to freshen, purify and keep tap water alkaline, helping to remove unwanted additives and impurities so that your water is left clean, clear and pure. So whether you need a large capacity bench top filter for a big family, a water jug, a portable water bottle or even a shower filtration system, there's a water filter to suit your lifestyle and needs!

Benefits of filtered water

Aside from tasting pure and clean, filtered water can also reduce many of the additives and contaminants which remain in tap water. In Australia, water is required to contain disinfectants such as chlorine, which can leave a lingering taste or smell which many people find unpleasant. Tap water can also contain impurities such as fine silt, affecting its colour. Here we covered the topic of contaminants in our tap water in more detail based on a study conducted by Macquarie University. Since the 1960s, fluoride has also been added to our drinking water to help support dental health, however families may opt to reduce this in their daily water consumption. Instead of consuming tap water, many Australians also opt for bottled water, which results in a lot of waste, with many plastic bottles actually ending up in landfill rather than being recycled. More than $500 million per year is spent on bottled water!1

Waters Co AcePot Bio+ Water Filter Jug
I have been using the Waters Co AcePot Bio+ Water Filter Jug for years now, but it has since had an upgrade to a much sleeker design! It's the perfect size to pop in the fridge door, it holds one litre of water and doesn't take long to fill and chill! It makes my water taste so pure and delicious and it works towards a pH level of approximately 7-8 (the optimum pH level for drinking water). It also adds a around 60 minerals to my water, and the filter is made using Activated Coconut Shell Carbon (rather than activated alumina like many other filters) to reduce chlorine content, heavy metals, bacteria and more. It is also designed to remove up to 99% of fluoride. These NSF Certified filters are also such good value, I used to use the original AcePot Jug and I loved it. It's incredibly high quality too, and the replacement filters pack will last for two years.

Waters Co BMP 500 5.25L Bench Top Alkaline Water Filter
Ideal for large families, households or small offices, the Waters Co BMP 500 5.25L Bench Top Alkaline Water Filter, a larger version of the Ace Pot (above), this is also designed to remove up to 99% of fluoride in tap water as well as chlorine, heavy metals and bacteria. Containing Coral and Silica Sands as well as Activated Coconut Shell Carbon, the filter is also designed to remineralise and ionises tap water through 13 stages of sterilising, filtration and activation. Each filter kit will last an average of four years before needing to be replaced with a new filter. Easy to use, just fill your glass or water bottle with the simple tap outlet. This filter also does not use activated alumina.

Black & Blum Activated Charcoal Filtered Water Bottle
Made from BPA free Tritan™ these Black & Blum Activated Charcoal Filtered Water Bottles come with it's own Activated Binchotan charcoal filter, designed to improve the taste of regular tap water. Binchotan water filters have been in Japan since the 17th century. These bottles hold 800ml of water and come in a range of colours with a natural cork lid. The diagrams below show how these work. Please note that these do not filter Fluoride.

Waters Co BMP Waterman Mini
Designed for portable alkaline water filtering, Waters Co BMP Waterman Mini is perfect for when you're on the go, removing chlorine, fluoride and impurities and remineralising tap water. Its filter contains Activated Carbon, Calcium Carbonate and Silica to alkalise and ionise ordinary tap water, making it taste clean and fresh. Compact and lightweight with a 600ml capacity, this easy to use water bottle is ideal for taking along to the gym or to work to ensure you stay hydrated. This is one of the few portable water bottles I have found that is also designed to remove fluoride.

321 Filter Water Bottle
Made from durable, easy to clean and BPA free material, the 321 Filter Water Bottle features a filter tree plunger system, designed to absorb impurities, odours and residue from tap water. Stylish yet functional, this 500ml, stain-resistant bottle is Australian made and can be safely cleaned in the dishwasher on the top shelf and without the filter. Working to neutralise chlorine and remove nasties, the Waters Co Therapy Shower Filter Deluxe With Shower Head (pictured above) is the perfect way to filter your shower water, helping to reduce the severity of skin irritations associated with chlorine exposure, such as eczema and psoriasis. With Vitamin C and natural Sea Collagen, this soothing shower filter helps to calm and tone skin while removing up to 99% of chlorine and saving water.
