Keratosis Pilaris is a common skin condition that presents itself as dry, rough patches of skin and tiny red bumps, which can appear on your thighs, arms and face. This condition affects both adolescents and adults and can worsen due to colder weather, dietary changes and vitamin deficiencies. Keratosis Pilaris occurs when there is a build up of Keratin, the key protein naturally produced by our bodies and found in hair and skin. Excess amounts of Keratin can block the opening of hair follicles, creating a bump which 'plugs' the opening.
Treatment of Keratosis Pilaris can be undertaken both internally and topically. Dietary changes such as reducing or eliminating gluten and dairy consumption may improve the appearance of this condition while avoiding conventional skincare products which contain drying ingredients and regularly exfoliating and moisturising with natural products can also help to reduce the appearance of bumps and spots. Skin smoothing treatments such as body scrubs and dry body brushing help to exfoliate the skin and remove excess skin cells, while lotions and oils help the skin's natural maintenance and renewal process, aiding in prevention of further Keratin build up.
