What it does

It's official: the occasional glass of red wine can do you good. It contains antioxidants and a substance called resveratrol, both of which have heart-healthy and incredible anti-aging skin care benefits. Red wine resveratrol is the substance that's garnered the most hype and attention in the health world. The resveratrol comes from the skin of grapes, and because red wine is fermented longer than white wine, it contains more of it. Research has shown that the anti-microbial substance can prevent blood clots as well as damage to blood vessels.

The antioxidants in red wine – called polyphenols – help to protect against artery damage. They also raise HDL, the 'good' cholesterol, and lower the amount of LDL, the 'bad' cholesterol, in your heart. Of course, the key is moderation – pair red wine with good nutrition to reap the health benefits.
