Your Guide To Natural Teeth Whitening

We all want pearly white teeth, but the thought of teeth whitening often conjures up some scary thoughts of pain and sensitivity and bleach. Unlike mainstream treatments, natural teeth whiteners use gentle ingredients to whiten, brighten and remineralise teeth and help keep them looking sparkly, so I've put together this guide to the best natural teeth whiteners.

They say you're never fully dressed without a smile, but a lot of us can get a bit self conscious about the colour of our teeth if they're not quite as white as we'd like. We all love our tea, coffee or even wine, but over time they can actually discolour our teeth with stubborn stains. Everyone wants truly pearly whites, but professional teeth whitening is often painful and expensive, with no guarantee for real results. Whether you prefer a paste, powder or a pen, natural teeth whiteners are actually really easy to work into your existing dental routine.

How to whiten your teeth naturally

Natural teeth whiteners work to remove stains on the teeth and any discolouration caused by bacteria and everyday factors such as drinking lots of coffee, tea and red wine. A bit more intensive than regular toothpastes, teeth whitening products use very light, gently abrasive natural ingredients that are designed to lift surface stains and brighten the teeth to give them a pearly shine. Many teeth whitening solutions also contain anti-bacterial properties to keep future stains at bay, and can even help to remineralise teeth to keep them healthy and prevent the growth of cavity-causing bacteria.

Benefits of natural teeth whiteners

Traditional teeth whitening can rely on heavy ingredients such as concentrated peroxides and bleaches to whiten the teeth. Often very harsh, they can sometimes increase tooth sensitivity and cause discomfort after treatment, which can actually linger onwards. The experience can even be painful, and you're usually told to steer clear of coloured food and drinks afterwards. If you want to whiten your teeth the natural way, I recommend reworking your dental routine rather than just opting for one whitening product. By doing little regular treatments with a paste or powder, you'll get results that last and are so easy to maintain.

Best natural teeth whitening products

My Magic Mud Whitening Toothpaste Peppermint
For daily help keeping your pearly whites bright, I love the My Magic Mud Whitening Toothpaste in Peppermint. While it might look messy, Activated Charcoal has incredible stain-removing and whitening properties, and this minty toothpaste is packed full of it to remove discolouration and absorb bacteria without damaging the enamel. It also contains gently abrasive, food grade Activated Coconut Shell Charcoal, Diatomaceous Earth and Bentonite Clay to deeply clean the mouth and remineralise teeth, as well as Peppermint Oil for refreshing flavour. Vegan and Gluten Free, use it as you would any other toothpaste, brushing twice a day for best results.

Dr Brite Rejuvenate Natural Teeth Cleaning and Whitening Kit
For those who want fast results at home, the Dr Brite Rejuvenate Natural Teeth Cleaning and Whitening Kit is an ideal natural teeth whitening system which can be used daily. Containing two whitening pens, an LED toothbrush, mouth rinse and natural toothpaste, each product has a very gentle formula and can be used by those of all ages, with visible results in 48 hours. Gluten Free and Vegan, this teeth whitening system is designed to provide complete support for oral health, helping to quickly, easily and painlessly lighten, whiten and brighten teeth without causing sensitivity.

Life Basics Bamboo & Charcoal Toothbrush
I love using the Life Basics Bamboo & Charcoal Toothbrush in conjunction with Charcoal teeth whiteners because I get double the effects of the Charcoal, leaving me with the cleanest teeth possible. Activated Binchotan Charcoal is also antibacterial and anti-fungal, helping to deodorise the mouth and reduce bacteria build-up. Available in soft bristle for sensitive teeth, regular medium bristle or kids size, these toothbrushes are also great as they're 100% biodegradable, so you're doing your bit for the environment as well as for your dental hygiene.

Dr Brite Cleansing Mouth Rinse
If you're after bright white teeth, you'll really need to rid your mouth of any stain-causing bacteria, and a good natural mouth rinse is essential for a thorough clean. I love the Dr Brite Cleansing Mouth Rinse in Peppermint because it combines Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Aloe Vera Juice and Spearmint Essential Oil to clean and refresh your mouth, ridding it of bacteria that might have built up during the day or overnight to leave you with a seriously clean mouth and sparkling teeth.

Warpaint Natural Teeth Whitener
The Warpaint Natural Teeth Whitener is another one of my all time favourite natural teeth whiteners because it really harnesses that Charcoal power to whiten teeth without weakening the enamel. Crafted from Activated Coconut Shell Charcoal, Australian Calcium Bentonite Clay and Organic Peppermint, this pH balancing powder can be used its own with a wet toothbrush, or you can actually mix it with coconut oil to make it into a paste (it's a bit less messy this way!). Vegan and Australian Made, it's great to use once a week in place of toothpaste to remove tartar and minimise discolouration.

Dr Brite Peroxide Free Teeth Whitening Pen Mint
If you're really not into Charcoal, a much tidier option is the Dr Brite Peroxide Free Teeth Whitening Pen. Ideal for those with very sensitive teeth, this Vegan, Gluten Free and peroxide-free gel formula uses a combination of Vitamin C, Coconut Oil and Baking Soda to remove stains and protect the gums, and it's so easy to use. You just use the pen to apply the solution to the teeth in a circular motion and leave on for a few minutes to allow the solution to dry.

Cedar + Stone Orange & Mint Teeth Whitener
I also really like the Cedar + Stone Orange & Mint Teeth Whitener for regular upkeep, which is a powder that you sprinkle on to a wet toothbrush then brush your teeth as normal. Vegan and Australian made, it uses Turmeric, Kaolin Clay, Coconut Powder and Birch Tree Extract, known for their teeth whitening properties, to lift stains, decrease bacteria in the mouth and leave you with a noticeably brighter smile almost instantly. Flavoured with Sweet Orange and Peppermint Essential Oils, this refreshing powder can be used a few times a week in place of your usual toothpaste, or as an extra step before your usual routine.

Dr Tungs Oil Pulling Concentrate
Adding Oil Pulling into your daily dental routine can also help to whiten the teeth, as the oil works to extract bacteria from the teeth and detoxify the mouth, really lifting up any stains and getting rid of anything that could lead to decay or discolouration. The Dr Tungs Oil Pulling Concentrate is a favourite of mine as it's made up of 24 herbs and botanicals including Cherry, Cardamom, Licorice and Turmeric in a Sesame Seed Oil base, which is known for its balancing, preventative and penetrative properties. An ancient Ayurvedic practice, oil pulling can help keep your teeth cleaner for longer. Place a tablespoon into your mouth, swish around for 5-15 minutes, then spit into the bin when finished.
