This week is Annual National Coeliac Awareness week. Organised by Coeliac Australia, this week (13th-20th of March) aims to increase symptom awareness, rates of testing and diagnosis and to support those who are Coeliac, Australia's most undiagnosed disease.
Coeliac disease is actually an auto-immune disease, where the immune system reacts abnormally to gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats) causing damage to the small bowel. Untreated or undiagnosed Coeliac disease can lead to a number of gastrointestinal symptoms as well as chronic systemic inflammation, poor nutrition and malabsorption of nutrients.
Some common symptoms of Coeliac disease include:
Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, bloating
Fatigue and lethargy
Weight loss (although some people may gain weight)
Bone and joint pains
Recurrent mouth ulcers
Skin rashes such as dermatitis
Easy bruising of the skin
Although coeliac disease cannot be cured, it can be easily managed with a life-long, strictly gluten-free diet. As we know, what we put on our skin is absorbed into our body, so if you are Coeliac, you may want to check that your makeup, skin and body care is gluten-free as well. To help makes this easier, Nourished Life has included a 'gluten free' filter on all our products.
To use, simply select the 'gluten free' option in the 'filter by' drop down menu on each page, or for more information feel free to contact us.
